What is the Design + Diversity Conference
The Design + Diversity conference explores proactive ways to make the design industry more diverse. This is the only conference that focuses on diversity issues in the design field. This event provides a platform for constructive conversation among those who design, innovate, and lead. We welcome the perspective of diversity and inclusion professionals, designers, and any active enthusiast.
For years the Design + Diversity conference has sought to inspire, celebrate and promote diversity within the design community. As the only conference that explores, not only diversity in design, but the diversity of design, we deliver value to conference attendees by providing topics that span the full breadth of design: from architecture to advertising, user experience to social impact design, and so much more. Additionally, this conference has created a platform for diverse speakers from around the country to present their work, challenge our assumptions and build our knowledge on a wide range of topics. This event provides a safe space for critical conversations among designers, innovators, and leaders. We welcome the perspective of diversity and inclusion professionals, designers, and all enthusiasts or allies.
In 2015 Timothy Hykes, a senior at the University of Missouri – Saint Louis presented ways to make the design industry more diversity. This was his senior thesis title Design + Diversity. After much talk and details, his professors challenged him to make good on his presentation by putting his words into action.
As the current Vice Present of AIGA St. Louis in 2016, he met with Antionette Carrol current president to see if the conference was possible. With the current climate in St. Louis after the Mike Brown shooting, they both agreed this was a critical and needed event for the future of design. Through their network of connections, they found a way to make the first conference in the summer of 2016 possible.
